Inside Steel City Liquidations

A conversation with Brent Simmons, Chief Executive Officer

From industry experience to building an independent liquidation company focused on asset recovery, inventory solutions, and creating value

Steel City Liquidations LLC was built around a straightforward idea: assets and inventory should not sit idle when there is an opportunity to put them back into productive use and recover value for their owners.

For Chief Executive Officer Brent Simmons, his time with MAC.BID was a valuable chapter in his professional development. The opportunity to help lead high-volume auction operations strengthened his industry knowledge, management skills, and understanding of secondary-market distribution. He carried that foundation forward in developing his vision for Steel City Liquidations.

We sat down with Simmons to discuss those roots, the philosophy behind Steel City Liquidations, and what he wants the company to become.

Before Steel City Liquidations, you worked with MAC.BID. How did that experience influence you?

Brent Simmons: My time with MAC.BID was an important and rewarding part of my professional growth. It gave me the opportunity to develop as a leader, work alongside dedicated teams, and gain a deeper understanding of the auction industry and the scale at which inventory moves through the secondary market.

I served as Assistant General Manager of two locations—Monroeville and Pittsburgh Mills—where I helped support the day-to-day operations of high-volume facilities. Depending on operational needs, the teams across those locations ranged from approximately 47 to 87 employees. Working with teams of that size was a valuable opportunity to strengthen my communication, coordination, and management skills.

Being involved in daily operations gave me practical experience in workforce coordination, inventory flow, logistics, customer service, and operational efficiency. I developed a strong appreciation for the teamwork and consistent execution that keep a busy auction operation moving.

That experience also deepened my understanding of how logistics, valuation, and market demand work together to create opportunities in the secondary market.

I’m grateful for the experience and the people I worked with at MAC.BID. The lessons I gained there remain an important part of the foundation I bring to Steel City Liquidations today.

What was the vision behind Steel City Liquidations from the beginning?

Brent: From the beginning, the vision was to build something much larger than a traditional resale operation. I wanted Steel City Liquidations to become a professional resource for businesses and asset owners that need practical solutions for inventory and assets that are no longer serving them.

The idea was to look beyond simply selling individual items and focus on the entire liquidation process—understanding the assets, identifying where the value is, determining the right strategy, and using the appropriate channels to convert those assets back into capital.

That can include excess inventory, closeouts, business equipment, surplus assets, distressed inventory, estate assets, or other holdings that need an efficient path back into the market.

Long term, the goal has always been to build the relationships, buyer network, operational capabilities, and market knowledge necessary to handle increasingly complex liquidation opportunities while staying focused on one fundamental objective: creating value from assets that might otherwise sit idle.

What separates your approach to liquidation?

Brent: Every liquidation has a different objective.

One client may need to clear warehouse space quickly. Another may be closing or restructuring an operation. Someone else may have significant inventory and be primarily concerned with maximizing recovery.

Before deciding how something should be liquidated, you need to understand why it needs to be liquidated.

From there, you can consider quantity, condition, location, market demand, timeframe, valuation, logistics, and the appropriate channels.

How important is valuation in that process?

Brent: Extremely important.

What somebody originally paid for an asset isn’t necessarily what today’s market will support. At the same time, something that appears insignificant can sometimes have considerable secondary-market demand.

Good liquidation decisions require understanding that difference.

Our objective is to identify realistic market opportunities and determine an efficient path for converting assets into value.

How did your experience with an established organization prepare you to build your own company?

Brent: It reinforced how important reputation is.

When you’re building your own company, your name is attached to every decision and every transaction. There isn’t a larger organization standing behind you.

That means communication, integrity, reliability, and execution become even more important. If you tell somebody you’re going to do something, you need to follow through.

That’s the type of reputation we’re working to build with Steel City.

What does “Move More. Waste Less. Create Value.” mean?

Brent: That’s essentially our operating philosophy.

Businesses across the country have inventory and assets that are no longer productive for them. Those assets may still have considerable value to another buyer or another market.

Liquidation creates that connection.

Move More. Waste Less. Create Value.

It’s simple, but it represents what we’re trying to accomplish.

What’s the long-term vision for Steel City Liquidations?

Brent: Growth, but disciplined growth.

We want to continue developing relationships with businesses and asset owners, expand our ability to handle larger liquidation opportunities, strengthen our buyer network, and continue developing the infrastructure necessary to move assets efficiently.

My experience with MAC.BID gave me a strong foundation in the auction industry and high-volume operations. Building Steel City Liquidations has given me the opportunity to apply those lessons to my own vision for inventory liquidation and asset recovery.

The goal now is to continue building Steel City Liquidations into a company businesses recognize when they have inventory or assets that need a solution.

From Experience to Independence

The story of Steel City Liquidations is ultimately one of taking industry experience and turning it into an independent business vision.

Today, the company continues building around asset acquisition, inventory liquidation, valuation, recovery, and strategic remarketing—with an emphasis on professional execution and creating measurable value from assets that might otherwise remain idle.
